Disney Dinner and a Movie: Week 1

Hey friends!

I started doing a Disney Dinner and Movie night a few months ago on my Youtube Channel and I felt like I needed a blog post to go with them. I don't know why exactly, but I wanted to go a little more in depth with each video.

I decided that to do my Disney dinners and movies, that I would go in Movie release order! The first released Disney movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It was released December 21st, 1937. It is based on a German Fairy Tale by the Brothers Grimm. It was a great success, and earned Walt Disney an honorary Oscar.

To find the food for tonight, I looked to the movie and Pinterest for inspiration. I had originally planned to make everything very extravagant. Making the whole dinner scene look like something from the movie. I planned on crafts, and just a lot of fun things for Eliza to do and play. I; however, do not know how to plan things so I was doing everything really last minute.

I decided for each dinner that I wanted to do something related to the culture of the movie for the appetizer. Since Snow White is a German story, I decided to do these things called German Bread Dumplings. (Spoiler alert: would NEVER do this again...) For the main course, I worked with my mom for a stew. In the movie Snow White makes a soup, and we decided to do our own take on that and do a beef stew. For the dessert we did... an apple pie. SHOCKER. I did think about doing a gooseberry pie which is what is shown in the movie, but could not find any until my mom told me that my sister's house apparently has some. An apple pie sounded a LOT easier though! I also made my own special "poison apple" drink. The drink was sprite, green luster dust, and watermelon cranberry juice.

I went out that morning to go get my supplies, I ended up at Ulta which was not on my list until I realized how close it was to Hobby Lobby, which was on my list. I was looking for Krista Horton's Tula Lemonade Hibiscus sugar scrub! I was so excited to finally find it in stock, and bought it! It smells soooo good, and I am sad that I did not buy Ulta's whole stock of them because they are discontinued now. If you happen to find it somewhere though or you can win it from one of her giveaways I highly recommend using it! Smells so good, and has helped my skin out tons! @krista.horton on instagram

On our stop at Hobby Lobby, we just bought edible glitter to put into our "fancy" drinks.

At Target, we first stopped at Starbucks and got a Venti Kiwi Starfruit refresher. No inclusions. Light apple juice. 1 pump raspberry syrup. Passion tea on top. It's a drink that I saw recommended that reminds people of Snow White, because of the red and yellow colors. Plus it has the apple juice flavoring! People have named it the "Poison Apple Drink" then we got all of the things that we needed for dinner!

When we got home, I got to work on the pie and the rest of the food. Eliza fell asleep in the car, so I put her straight into the bed when we got there. I learned the correct way to peel apples. Also as a public service announcement, my mom is gluten free so each of the recipes that I am making are gluten free. I also learned how to "cut butter into something" and realized how hard butter is when it isn't soft... Also, if you have not previously worked with gluten free dough, it is a PAIN. I finally got everything to work for me.

I don't know how to plan things as I said earlier, and everything is ALWAYS more work than I thought it would be. Which makes everything even harder for me.. I am really grumpy that this being my first vlog video, I didn't have a good camera angle and you saw my face 99.9% of the time. I prefer you to be able to see the food, but I did not have a tripod or any type of stand and was working with just propping my phone up.

I also found out that I really like the sugar covered apples that go in the apple pie.. and so does Eliza. The original recipe I was following for the apple pie told me to put a regular crust on top, but my sister has turned me into a fan of a crumb top crust, and it is 100x better to me. I found a separate recipe for the crumb top and the pie actually turned out delicious!

I honestly do not even want to talk about the German bread dumplings. They were a COMPLETE fail and absolutely disgusting. I would be willing to try them somewhere else that actually knows how to make them, but I would never try it again.. they were a mess and did not taste good at all. There was a note on the recipe that I completely missed though. Since I was using almond milk, I needed to add in an extra egg because almond milk does not have the same binding properties as soy milk. I was not a fan of the taste of what did come out at all though. My dad did not completely hate it, it was just interesting to him. I was definitely not a fan of it though.

To make my special "poison apple" drink, I put Sprite in a glass with ice and added the green luster dust. Then I just added the watermelon cranberry juice right on top of that, and it stayed separated.

My mom made the soup, and she browned the stew meat. She sautéed the onions with the meat. Added garlic, carrots, celery, seasonings, and potatoes.

We all loved the pie and the stew. The bread dumplings just existed (except the gluten-free ones, those fell apart)

I will hopefully get back to doing these Disney dinner and movies soon, but they get a bit expensive, and the extra money is not quite in the books for them yet. I will be doing the "play-by-play" for the rest of the videos in the coming weeks. I will see about doing one weekly, but we all know life is crazy and I am not the best at posting blogs on time.... or doing anything else on time..
